Can I Wear Mascara with Extensions?

It’s the number one question we get at the studio: “Sandy, I have a big event tonight… can I just add a little bit of mascara to my extensions to make them pop?”

We get it, sometimes you want that extra “oomph.” But before you reach for that wand, we have to give you the professional verdict.

The Short Answer: Please, Don’t.

While technically nothing is stopping you from physically applying it, wearing mascara with lash extensions is the fastest way to ruin your investment.

Here is why we almost always recommend skipping the mascara tube once you’ve been “lashed” by Sandy.

1. It Breaks Down the Adhesive

Most over-the-counter mascaras (especially waterproof ones) contain oils and waxes. These ingredients are designed to stay on your lashes, but they are the natural enemy of professional lash glue. The oil will eat away at the bond, causing your beautiful extensions to slide off long before they should.

2. The “Closing” of the Fans

If you have Hybrid or Volume lashes, mascara is a definite “no.” Volume lashes are made of delicate “fans” of multiple thin fibers. Mascara causes these fans to clump together and close up. Instead of a fluffy, voluminous look, you’ll end up with thick, spindly spikes that can’t be brushed out.

3. The Cleaning Nightmare

The hardest part about mascara isn’t putting it on… it’s getting it off. Lash extensions require gentle cleaning. To fully remove mascara, you usually have to rub or scrub the lash line. This physical friction leads to premature shedding and can even pull out your natural lashes.

4. Hygiene Hazards

Mascara trapped between your extensions and your eyelid is a magnet for bacteria. If you can’t clean it all away, you risk developing blepharitis (eyelid inflammation) or even an eye infection.

What Should You Do Instead?

If you feel like your lashes aren’t “enough,” mascara isn’t the solution, a style adjustment is!

  • Go Bolder: If you currently have a Classic set and want more drama, ask Sandy about switching to a Hybrid or Volume set at your next fill.
  • Keep Them Clean: Sometimes lashes look dull simply because they have a buildup of makeup or skin oils. A good “Lash Bath” with a professional cleanser will make them look dark and fluffy again!

The Verdict: Skip the mascara! Your extensions are designed to replace your makeup routine, not add to it. Save your time, save your money, and keep those lashes healthy.
