The Top Lash Extension Don’ts – What NOT to Do with Your Gorgeous New Lashes

So, you just left your lash appointment with a fresh set of beautiful, fluttery extensions, now what? As a lash technician, I want to make sure your lashes stay full, fabulous, and healthy for as long as possible. While I always go over aftercare with my clients, it never hurts to have a reminder of the biggest don’ts when it comes to maintaining your extensions.

Here are the top things you should avoid when rocking your lash extensions:

1. Don’t Get Them Wet for the First 24–48 Hours

Your lash adhesive needs time to cure properly. Getting your lashes wet too soon can weaken the bond, causing premature shedding. Avoid steam, saunas, sweating, and direct water during this period.

2. Don’t Use Oil-Based Products Around Your Eyes

Oil is the enemy of lash glue! It breaks down the adhesive and leads to your extensions falling out faster. Make sure your makeup remover, moisturizers, and eye creams are oil-free.

3. Don’t Rub, Pull, or Play with Your Lashes

Even if they feel a little different at first, avoid touching them unnecessarily. Tugging or rubbing can damage your natural lashes and cause your extensions to fall out unevenly.

4. Don’t Sleep Face-Down

Try your best to sleep on your back or side. Sleeping face-down can crush your lashes, twist them, or even cause breakage. A silk or satin pillowcase can also help reduce friction.

5. Don’t Use Mascara – Especially Waterproof!

Most clients don’t need mascara with extensions (that’s the beauty of them!). But if you must, use a lash extension-safe mascara. Waterproof formulas are a big no, they’re hard to remove and can weaken the adhesive.

6. Don’t Skip Brushing Them

It might seem strange at first, but brushing your lashes daily with a clean spoolie keeps them looking neat, fluffy, and prevents tangling.

7. Don’t Attempt to Remove Them Yourself

Please, please don’t try to pull them off at home! You could damage your natural lashes. If you need them removed or want a break, let your lash tech do it professionally and safely.

8. Don’t Go Too Long Between Fills

Waiting too long between fills can result in uneven, patchy lashes. Aim to come back every 2–3 weeks to keep your set looking full and fresh.

9. Don’t Neglect Cleaning Your Lashes

Yes, you need to wash your lashes – gently! Use a lash extension-safe cleanser or diluted baby shampoo to remove buildup, dirt, and oils. This keeps your lashes healthy and prevents irritation or infection.

10. Don’t Expect Them to Last Forever

Lash extensions shed with your natural lash cycle – typically every 6 to 8 weeks. Taking proper care of them will extend their life, but regular maintenance is key to always looking your best.
